Just for Swingers

Outdoor weddings are all about the beautiful scenery.  A decorated swing can enhance setting and you can make it yourself.  Then personalize it with the colorful fabrics, streamers, flowers, or even keeping it plain, all your guests will get a kick out of being swingers for a day. Below a video from DIY Network Romantic Embellished Swing.

I Love This Idea

This was a recent freelance job Filipa Rodrigues had done for a wedding.  I just happened to find this on one of my favorite sites Vimeo (a video sharing site).

Animation is not just for kids.  This is a fun way to capture the mood and keep family and friends excited about the up coming nuptials.  It's cute, fun, and your friends and family won't stop talking about it.

Summer Weddings/Party Crashers Can Really Bug Guests

If you're planning a beautiful outdoor wedding you must plan for those uninvited guests, bugs.  They can be a real mood killer.  Guests will be swatting, fanning, and some may even be allergic to bug bites, which can turn your wedding into a killer affair.

Time of day could be a factor to bugs coming to the party.  Dusk  and early morning appears to be when bugs like mosquitoes and gnats are active, so you may want to plan for after dusk or when the summer sun is at it's highest, but, have plenty of water and umbrellas to protect your guests from the hot sun.

Although a wedding by the lake (or any standing body of water), may be beautiful, this could present some issues.  Just be mindful that the unwanted guests may crash.

Pest control at your wedding is not something you want to concentrate on.  You can try some of these tricks to help the wedding crashers at bay.

1. Hire a Pest Control service.  If you are getting married on family property, this could take some of the worry off your list.  The company will come out and provide you with the best solution based on your needs. FCM Pest Wire

2. Citronella Candles and Torches, the citronella oil is made from citronella grass, which grows in several countries in Southeast Asia. This tall grass has a pleasant lemon scent. This scent keeps some flying insects away, including mosquitoes, with its natural aroma.

3. Bug Spray, supply your guests with some natural bug repellent.

What happened to the Cicadas.  2013 was to be their mating year, it had been 17 years and the city would sound like call of the wild.  Cicadas are known for deafening high pitch droning sound, which is just annoying.  Some reports described locust like swarms, while others made us aware of this event.  It was suggested that outdoor weddings should have umbrellas on hand for guests.

That's all changed, they just not coming.  According to this New York Times article 'Swan Song for Cicadas, but Many Missed the Show', there has been a change of plans.  So party on, at least this is party crasher.........more and likely will not be coming.

DIY: Table Top

This fabric is 108 inches wide and the stripe goes across from selvage to selvage (the edge of the fabric that is woven so the fabric does not unravel)

Fabric available at:
Fabric House Inc
214A W. 39th Street (btwn 7th and 8th Ave)
NYC, NY

You have seen the basic table cloths that are lovely but B-A-S-I-C. I found these beautiful stripe organza fabrics that were 108 inches wide. With that width you may not have to piece it together.

It may seem simple enough to just cut and throw it over the table, but not so fast. If you want a nice clean finished look here at MonkeySee.com there are about 6 how to video steps to take you through the process.

The Iceman Cometh

Iceberg Slim, Iceberg Straight Ahead, Ice Ice Ice Baby, I could have settled on any one of these titles but settled on The Iceman Cometh, it fit because it's cool ;-) (thank you Eugene O'Neil).

Last night at The Wedding Salon Mini Boot Camp, which was jam packed with a excited brides and a few grooms. Each vendor (vendor list) made a presentation and brides were able to ask questions to help them with their planning goals. As New York MTA would have it (really, I just left late) I missed Mr. Shintaro Okamoto's presentation, who was first to speak. He took a little time with me at the end of the event.

Ice sculptures take an event to a luxurious new heights. Can you imagine your cocktail hour with the bar made completely of ice. Mr. Okamoto can. Or individual ice sculptures with caviar, sushi/shashimi or even on the sweet side, a scoop of wine flavored sorbet, Mr. Okamoto has done it. The portfolio is quite impressive and Okamoto Studio New York Ice Sculpture does not just make ice sculptures. These are artists are like Michelangelo's with electric saws, boots, and good music to work by. Ice can become anything you like. Wow your guest and Wow yourself.

The Iceman, Mr. Okamoto, Cometh
and he is cool

Cassandra's Quinceanera

Just like a wedding, a Quinceanera is filled with ceremony, pageantry, frills, and excitement. I was honored to create a gown for this lovely lady, Cassandra (we share the same name).
A Quinceanera

This rite of passage for 15 year old Latina girls is a celebration filled with great tradition. The young girl crosses over into womanhood with her family and a community of friends who act as witnesses to this important event. A Quincearnera is long associated with the Aztecs. 15 is the age a young girl will leave her home to marry and create a family of her own. From this moment on she is considered an adult and will be treated differently.
Today's Quincearnera's are very similar to American's Sweet 16. However, Clara (Mom) kept the traditions that were important to her family.
The event begins with a full Mass. There are 7 to 8 couples representing the number 15. They were all dressed in her favorite color. The men in white tuxedos carried white canes.

A young boy carries a pillow with her "first" high heels, she enters the church in flat shoes. A young girl carries a heart shape pillow with a crown on it. During the ceremony Cassandra's grandfather changed her flat shoes to the high heels and her mother placed the crown on her head. After the Mass, the Princess and her Court was then whisked away in a huge limo to the party. This was no simple little birthday party it was a catered event jammed packed with fun.

Like most teenagers, Cassandra had a vision. This included a picture of Beyonce and could I make that. Well, we had some revisions. However, her strapless dress was in a China silk that was tie dyed 5 different colors. The bodice was hand roused with a straight short skirt under. The removable overskirt had miles and miles of hand torn ruffles. This allowed her to dance later in a short dress. The dress took a little over 24 yards. I kept calling this the first wedding and you could say she married into adulthood. I asked her mother Clara "What are you going to do for the wedding". She said with a sigh and a huff "She's on her own!"

 Proud Mom Clara
